Providing
support for manic-depressives
The Lithium
Club was founded in 1983 as a self-help support group for manic-depressives
and their families. In 1998 it gained international charity status.
Although it
was originally aimed at helping patients in East Anglia, the Club
is now in regular contact with patients, carers and doctors throughout
the world.
Membership of
the Lithium Club means that no manic-depressive ever needs to feel
misunderstood, isolated or alone with their often alarming thoughts.
Why Lithium?
Lithium Carbonate
has proved to be the most effective therapy for treating the majority
of manic-depressive patients.
It controls the characteristic mental and emotional instability
and helps patients to enjoy an acceptable quality of life by subduing
morbid thought patterns. It also helps to combat potential suicidal
tendencies.
Membership
Membership is
open to anyone suffering from depression, mania or manic-depression.
You do not need to be on Lithium therapy to join us. The families
and friends of sufferers are equally welcome.
Support for
you
Through The
Lithium Club we provide information, encouragement, and understanding
to all manic-depressives, carers and concerned people.
Trained Advisors
A helpline is
available at the Charity's Head Office in East Anglia. We will always
answer questions and provide advice, especially about the use of
Lithium, which is highly toxic and needs to be administered with
care. The expertise that is required to advise patients on how to
take it therapeutically and safely is available.
Monthly newsletter
All members
receive our monthly news-letter. This is edited by one of our medical
consultants and is an important focal point for our activities.
It contains news about medical developments, new literature, social
functions and many other matters of interest to manic-depressives
and their families and friends.
Social functions
Members receive
invitations to regular social functions, which provide a valuable
opportunity to meet fellow patients. Many sufferers find this to
be an invaluable experience.
Library
An ever-expanding
library of specialist books and literature is available to members.
Future plans
We rely on donations,
membership fees and cash from our charity collection boxes to maintain
our activities and pursue our objective to provide 'halfway house'
short stay accommodation for patients who do not need full mental
hospital care. Any funds you can contribute will be wisely used,
and enable us to continue with the ever increasing demand for our
help, that is available to patients, their families and other carers.
